The last time that happened to me was on the lower tidal Potomac River last summer. I was fishing an outgoing tide from shore in prime Largemough Bass habitat. There were swirls everwhere and I threw everything in the box at them. Some local lads came by and said that they were a fish called golden chubs or golden suckers. Not carp but similar. I asked what they take and the boys said nothing. They are chasing each other and spawning and although they look great, you cannot catch them on a lure. Live and learn. So you may have had something other than sea trout. Or maybe you were just unlucky. It happens.

The only way of compensating

The only way of compensating for [i:9e12e5d705]not[/i:9e12e5d705] having a hat like mine, is to get one of the new GFF caps. That will improve the size of your catches...in general.

I am surpised you figured out

I am surpised you figured out that Marge inspired me the way she did.

Even though it eas a kelt it was a nice and strong one. Hopefully the wind will go down within a week or two, so we can go fishing for some silver bars.

Owner Hooks

I tried the BendBack species but didn't like the point offset angle regarding the direction of the hook set and the diverging angle of the hook point...the force vector is compromised.
'Still (IHMO) probably better than "bending your own"...
If you can bend it, so can they... :shock:

After looking around and a bunch of R&D/tank tests, Gamagatsu and Owner were the only ones left standing...
The Owner Rig'n Hooks are strong and well suited for my smaller applications (sand lances, silversides,etc)...sharp, strong, thin wire...waytogo!
The Owner Oversize 7/0 is a good size but there is a little give in the wire than negates HONKIN' on the fish during the fight...This is what I use for most of my Hook Up Phlyz...sofarsogood!
The Oversize 11/0 is BIG and STRONG and the gap is Grand Canyonesque...for REALLY BIG Hook Upz... :roll:

Keep 'em sparse and flowing...LESS IS MORE...
...especially when they are undulating at first light "INSINUATING" breakfast.. :wink:

There is a video showing how to tie the Prince Nymph currently posted on iTunes. Regarding the "horns" - the original tie I believe used a beard-type hackle and not a full hackle collar. FWIW, I prefer the full collar tied sparse and tie the "horns" on top.

Forget the quill win

Forget the quill wing AND the calftail for your Coachman's. Use a white hen hackle tip for the standard Coachman and if you want to tie small Wulff's (#14-20), use some white poly yarn. Very functional and very neat ( yes, I am a stickler for appearance).

For that fish....

Martin, I would do just about anything in the fashion department to catch that fish. I already dress like a hobo when I fish. What difference could a funky hat make? That is one sensational fish. Is Kasper a friendly ghost? I hope so.

I wonder what you would wear (or take off!) for the second or third fish Kasper got. He is probably too modest to post it himself:

And notice: Kasper is a big guy. The fish probably about 90 centimetres or close to 3 feet! Even though it's a kelt, that is one strong fish!

Nicely done and an excellent idea. For the record, Mustad has discontinued the 79666 keel hook - I've confirmded this with the North American Mustad rep. I've been looking at various worm hooks to do something very similar to what you've created (I'm playing with imitations of immature carp for largish bass of the striped hybrid variety that live in the Ohio River - and if I'm very lucky and outsized Flathead catfish, which is a nearly impossible fish on a fly for many reasons you might not anticipate). Thanks for sharing a great combination of tying techniques - flatwings, keel flies and bendbacks!

Now that is one very nice hopper imitation, similar to the one I use personally, however...hoppers often kick in the water, so, by replacing the hind legs with thin rubber strands (tied in a similar manner as shown here), makes for an absolutely deadly pattern!
